What Top Employers look for in New College Grads
Rules:
1.  Don't act like the stereo-typed Millennial [lazy, spoiled, conceited]
2.  Clean up your social profile [check your old social media accounts; get on LinkedIn; Google yourself - because your potential employer will]
3.  Background check [Credit history - carrying large debt could be a red flag for positions requiring financial responsibility]
4.  Don't lie [no exaggerating; 58% of employers have caught lies on resumes]
5.  Know the company - do some serious homework [Go beyond the "About Us" tab; is it a public company? Where is it based? What are the lines of business? And most important, who do YOU know at that company that could vouch for you?]

Notes:
- Only 1% of recruiters say that the name of your college and your GPA are top factors when hiring new grads. This is usually restricted to technical jobs like engineering.
- Only 3% of recruiters place your college major as a top factor.
-  61% of recruiters said that "drive" and "passion" were top factors.
-  Recruiters advice:
          1. Don't miss career fairs or recruiter visits to meet face-to-face with recruiters
          2.  Prepare a 30-second elevator pitch about who you are, what your major is, and why you're interested in working for the company. PRACTICE IT!
          3.  Tell a story - about a specific time you overcame adversity or faced a challenge. Draw on your experiences from clubs, volunteering and work experience.
          4.  Ask questions -  Almost every interview will end with asking you if you have any questions. Your answer should be yes. Ask for examples of the kind of work you would be doing, or examples of projects current employees are already working on. Ask the recruiter what they like about their job, or what they find most challenging.

How to Judge a College by its Career Services Office

Nearly All Good Jobs Now Require a College Degree
finance.yahoo.com
College or bust. Literally.  That’s the upshot of new research by employment firm Burning Glass, which found that many employers now require a bachelor’s degree for positions that they used to fill with high school grads—even when the work itself hasn’t changed. Some employers are even willing to spend two or three times as long to fill an opening just to get the coveted college grad.............

The Terrifying Reality of Long-Term Unemployment

It's an awful catch-22: employers won't hire you if you've been out of work for more than six months
By Matthew O'Brien | The Atlantic

Close your eyes and picture the scariest thing you can think of. Maybe it's a giant spider or a giant Stay Puft marshmallow man or something that's not even giant at all. Well, whatever it is, I guarantee it's not nearly as scary as the real scariest thing in the world. That's long-term unemployment.  There are two labor markets nowadays.
