Loan foregiveness resources:
One of the greatest opportunities for stressed out college graduates is student “loan forgiveness” or “loan repayment” programs. These programs offer to eliminate some or all of your student loans in return for choosing certain careers, military service, and even volunteer work. Such programs can eliminate anywhere from a few thousand dollars to over $100,000 of student loans. Ironically, many of these programs receive a relatively small number of applications indicating that many graduates are completely unaware of these opportunities. Read more here http://collegesavings.about.com/od/financialaid/a/loanforgiveness.htm
Directories of Student Loan Repayment and Forgiveness Programs: There are literally hundreds of loan forgiveness programs available to graduates. Many times, professional associations within different industries will maintain a list of student loan repayment and forgiveness programs that apply to their profession. Here’s a list of some places to start researching the possibility of getting your student loans cancelled or repaid: Teachers: The American Federation of Teachers (state-by-state directory) http://www.aft.org/yourwork/tools4teachers/fundingdatabase/ [Just type in FUNDING TYPE (loan forgiveness) and POSITION (classroom teacher) to get a listing of ALL of the states programs.]
FEDERAL RESOURCES: http://studentaid.ed.gov/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/charts/teacher
There are two types of loan forgiveness programs for teachers:
Teacher Loan Forgiveness for Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans, and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans
Teacher Cancellation for Federal Perkins Loans
PERKINS LOAN FORGIVENESS http://www.aft.org/yourwork/tools4teachers/fundingdatabase/detail.cfm?ProgramID=227 began in 1972 and will forgive up to 100% of your loan if you are a full-time teacher in a district eligible for ESEA Title-1 funding, a special education teacher in a district or qualified provider of early intervention services under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), or a full-time teacher in a state-designated shortage area.
PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS http://www.finaid.org/loans/publicservice.phtml began in 2007 as a result of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. Eligible borrowers are entitled to have the entirety of their debt (interest and principal) discharged after ten years of full time employment in public service. The borrower must have made 120 payments as part of the Direct Loan program in order to obtain this benefit. Only payments made on or after October 1, 2007 count toward the required 120 monthly payments. Borrowers are permitted to consolidate into Direct Lending in order to qualify for this loan forgiveness program.
