Eligibility: Volunteer projects usually require the following minimum requirements: Age 18 and above (for most projects); Reasonable standard of English; Good physical condition; Flexibility to live in a different environment with changes in diet, living conditions, weather and with people from all over the world, etc; Meet the basic conditions listed in the Project Registration Form You should know that there are also projects that accept families with children.

Description: Wildlife Medicine Internships at The Center are variable in length and are free of charge. Housing is available on a very limited basis for a fee of $50.00 a week. The Center treats approximately 3,000-5,000 native and naturalized wild animals representing 225 species per year. Student interns perform as the primary work force of the Center. They are responsible for all aspects of the daily operation of a nonprofit wildlife animal hospital. All skills are taught to the students by full-time, on staff veterinarians, a certified veterinary technician, an office manager and a resource development officer.

FDA’s Windows to Regulatory Research Internship ProgramThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers internships at the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine each summer (in Maryland).
Opportunities at the CVM are available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in the U.S. that have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA and are pursuing a course of study in a veterinary related field. The program is ten weeks in length and begins in June.
Compensation ranges from $4812 to $9996, though housing is not provided.
MSU’s Enrichment Summer ProgramThe Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine offers an Enrichment Summer Program to aspiring veterinary students.
The ESP program is offered to educationally, economically, or culturally disadvantaged students with a 2.7-grade point average or higher. There are three program levels, ranging from undergrads wishing to explore a veterinary career to those who have already made the decision to become vets and will apply to a professional program within the next year.
Interns are compensated with a stipend, and additional compensation for travel assistance is possible. Housing is available on the MSU campus at an additional cost.
Purdue’s Veterinary Scholars Research ProgramThe Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine (in Indiana) offers a Veterinary Scholars Summer Research Program for undergraduate and graduate students.
This program is designed to expose future vets to non-practice careers such as biomedical or clinical research. During their time at Purdue, students complete their own research study under the direction of a Purdue, faculty member.
Undergraduate students are compensated with a stipend of $3,000 for the summer program, while graduate students are compensated at the rate of $5,000.
Seneca Park Zoo’s Pre-Vet InternshipThe Seneca Park Zoo in New York offers a Pre-Veterinary Summer Fellowship to students that have completed at least two years of a pre-veterinary degree, gained at least 100 hours of practical experience in a veterinary setting, and maintained a 3.0 GPA.
The intern will assist with veterinary treatments, necropsies, surgeries, clinical rounds, behavioral observations, and chemical immobilizations. Interns also complete a research project. The internships are five weeks in length and are available from May to August.
Fellowships are fully funded with a stipend though housing is not provided.
PIADC’s Research Participation ProgramThe Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) in Orient, New York offers a Research Participation Program for undergraduate or graduate students studying veterinary medicine, pathology, or other biological sciences.
Students work full-time on research projects related to animal diseases. Projects may include topics in epidemiology, vaccine development, and immune response and research positions usually last for 12 months.
Benefits may include a monthly stipend, partial medical coverage, and some travel reimbursement.
Staten Island Zoo’s Internship ProgramThe Staten Island Zoo in New York offers a veterinary technician internship to current college students or recent graduates with majors in biology, zoology, or a closely related field.
Interns assist vets and vet techs with husbandry, veterinary care, and lab work over the course of their internship, which can last from three months to a year. There is also the potential for independent research projects for college credit.
Interns are asked to commit at least two days a week, and this is an unpaid internship.
Select Sires Veterinarian InternshipSelect Sires in Ohio offers a veterinary internship to undergraduate or graduate students with interest in food animal medicine.
Interns assist with physical exams, herd health duties, the collection of blood or semen samples from bulls, and implementation of biosecurity measures. The internship is a minimum of 4 weeks long and is offered in spring and summer sessions.
Students receive an hourly wage during the internship, but housing is not provided.
More Internship OpportunitiesThese are just a few of the internship opportunities for pre-veterinary students, and there are more available. Some concentrate on particular areas of study and will be of great value if you’re interested in pursuing any of these specialties.Working at a local small animal veterinary clinic is another great way to get your foot in the door. Most new employees at veterinary clinics start out by cleaning cages and washing dogs. Once you establish a reputation for being a dedicated team player, the vet will usually offer you the chance to act as a veterinary assistant during exams and procedures.

Animal Health-Pharmaceutical Sales Internships

The field of veterinary pharmaceutical sales is a highly competitive career path in the animal industry. While jobs are hard to obtain, positions in this field offer exceptional compensation to successful sales representatives. Candidates can increase their chances of finding employment if they complete a relevant internship during their college years. Here is a sampling of internship opportunities in the animal health industry.
Elanco
Elanco, the animal health division of the Eli Lilly company, offers internships at its corporate headquarters in Indiana. Internships are offered to both undergraduate and graduate students studying biology, animal science, marketing, sales, or a related area. Internships last from 10 to 12 weeks, beginning in May and ending in September. Interns receive compensation and housing and moving assistance is possible.
Pfizer Animal Health
Pfizer Animal Health offers internships to graduate and undergraduate students through their University Relations program. The Summer Student Worker Program hires students as contractors beginning late May through mid-August. A veterinary medicine option has been offered in previous years, and opportunities with Pfizer are available in a number of states. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a 3.0-grade point average to be considered. Another option for students is the Pfizer Scholars Program, a fellowship position that allows students to pursue research work while also earning a stipend or academic credit.
Merck
Merck offers a Future Talent Program for college students, either as a summer intern (for a period of 9 to 11 weeks) or as what Merck calls co-ops (i.e., assignments lasting four months during the calendar year). Students receive competitive compensation, and a housing or transportation allowance may also be possible.
Nestle Purina
Nestle Purina offers a Veterinary Channel Sales Internship that focuses on helping students develop sales accounts with veterinary offices for Purina animal nutrition products. Internships are offered to college undergraduates during their junior year. Internships last 10 weeks during the summer. Interns receive a salary, mileage reimbursement, and housing assistance. Successful interns are offered employment with the company after graduation.
Accelerated Genetics
Accelerated Genetics offers several internships including a Sales and Service Internship. Interns are involved in the areas of artificial insemination of dairy or beef cattle, market research studies, and servicing retail sales routes. Internships are based in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. Accelerated Genetics also offers internships in Marketing and Communications, Genetic Services, and Information Systems.
Alltech
Alltech offers a Marketing Internship Program at its international headquarters in Kentucky. Marketing interns work in public relations, species management, brand management, and other marketing areas. Interns also complete a project during their time at Alltech. Both full-time and part-time internships are available for undergraduate and graduate level students. Research internships are also available.
Bayer Animal Health
Bayer Animal Health offers a variety of animal-related internship opportunities available through their Human Resources department which will provide a list upon request. Bayer manufactures a wide variety of pharmaceutical products for both the livestock and companion animal markets.
Monsanto
Monsanto offers summer internships or semester-long co-op opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must have at least a 3.0-grade point average. Interns receive a salary, travel reimbursement, and relocation assistance. Internships are offered in such disciplines as supply chain management, agribusiness, and biotechnology, among others. In the past, sales and marketing internship positions gave students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience selling such biotech products as bovine somatotropin.
ADM Alliance Nutrition
ADM Alliance Nutrition offers internships in a variety of areas including field sales and national account sales. Applicants must be juniors in college with and a 2.8-grade point average. Interns are allowed to go on sales calls, collect marketing data, and work on special projects as directed by their supervisors.
Boehringer-Ingelheim Vetmedica
Boehringer-Ingelheim Vetmedica offers internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in many areas including pharmaceutical marketing. Applicants for these internships must be at least sophomores in college with a 3.2-grade point average. In the past, the company offered a dairy sales internship that allowed interns to work with territory sales managers and assist with sales calls.
Those wishing to pursue the field of veterinary pharmaceutical sales may also find valuable internship opportunities in related areas. Other internships related to animal science, equine science, or veterinary medicine also add strength to a candidate’s resume. FDA’s Windows to Regulatory Research Internship ProgramThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers internships at the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine each summer (in Maryland).
Opportunities at the CVM are available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in the U.S. that have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA and are pursuing a course of study in a veterinary related field. The program is ten weeks in length and begins in June.
Compensation ranges from $4812 to $9996, though housing is not provided.
MSU’s Enrichment Summer ProgramThe Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine offers an Enrichment Summer Program to aspiring veterinary students.
The ESP program is offered to educationally, economically, or culturally disadvantaged students with a 2.7-grade point average or higher. There are three program levels, ranging from undergrads wishing to explore a veterinary career to those who have already made the decision to become vets and will apply to a professional program within the next year.
Interns are compensated with a stipend, and additional compensation for travel assistance is possible. Housing is available on the MSU campus at an additional cost.
Purdue’s Veterinary Scholars Research ProgramThe Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine (in Indiana) offers a Veterinary Scholars Summer Research Program for undergraduate and graduate students.
This program is designed to expose future vets to non-practice careers such as biomedical or clinical research. During their time at Purdue, students complete their own research study under the direction of a Purdue, faculty member.
Undergraduate students are compensated with a stipend of $3,000 for the summer program, while graduate students are compensated at the rate of $5,000.
Seneca Park Zoo’s Pre-Vet InternshipThe Seneca Park Zoo in New York offers a Pre-Veterinary Summer Fellowship to students that have completed at least two years of a pre-veterinary degree, gained at least 100 hours of practical experience in a veterinary setting, and maintained a 3.0 GPA.
The intern will assist with veterinary treatments, necropsies, surgeries, clinical rounds, behavioral observations, and chemical immobilizations. Interns also complete a research project. The internships are five weeks in length and are available from May to August.
Fellowships are fully funded with a stipend though housing is not provided.
PIADC’s Research Participation ProgramThe Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) in Orient, New York offers a Research Participation Program for undergraduate or graduate students studying veterinary medicine, pathology, or other biological sciences.
Students work full-time on research projects related to animal diseases. Projects may include topics in epidemiology, vaccine development, and immune response and research positions usually last for 12 months.
Benefits may include a monthly stipend, partial medical coverage, and some travel reimbursement.
Staten Island Zoo’s Internship ProgramThe Staten Island Zoo in New York offers a veterinary technician internship to current college students or recent graduates with majors in biology, zoology, or a closely related field.
Interns assist vets and vet techs with husbandry, veterinary care, and lab work over the course of their internship, which can last from three months to a year. There is also the potential for independent research projects for college credit.
Interns are asked to commit at least two days a week, and this is an unpaid internship.
Select Sires Veterinarian InternshipSelect Sires in Ohio offers a veterinary internship to undergraduate or graduate students with interest in food animal medicine.
Interns assist with physical exams, herd health duties, the collection of blood or semen samples from bulls, and implementation of biosecurity measures. The internship is a minimum of 4 weeks long and is offered in spring and summer sessions.
Students receive an hourly wage during the internship, but housing is not provided.

Some concentrate on particular areas of study and will be of great value if you’re interested in pursuing any of these specialties.Working at a local small animal veterinary clinic is another great way to get your foot in the door. Most new employees at veterinary clinics start out by cleaning cages and washing dogs. Animal Health-Pharmaceutical Sales Internships

The field of veterinary pharmaceutical sales is a highly competitive career path in the animal industry. While jobs are hard to obtain, positions in this field offer exceptional compensation to successful sales representatives. Candidates can increase their chances of finding employment if they complete a relevant internship during their college years. Here is a sampling of internship opportunities in the animal health industry.
Elanco
Elanco, the animal health division of the Eli Lilly company, offers internships at its corporate headquarters in Indiana. Internships are offered to both undergraduate and graduate students studying biology, animal science, marketing, sales, or a related area. Internships last from 10 to 12 weeks, beginning in May and ending in September. Interns receive compensation and housing and moving assistance is possible.
Pfizer Animal Health
Pfizer Animal Health offers internships to graduate and undergraduate students through their University Relations program. The Summer Student Worker Program hires students as contractors beginning late May through mid-August. A veterinary medicine option has been offered in previous years, and opportunities with Pfizer are available in a number of states. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a 3.0-grade point average to be considered. Another option for students is the Pfizer Scholars Program, a fellowship position that allows students to pursue research work while also earning a stipend or academic credit.
Merck
Merck offers a Future Talent Program for college students, either as a summer intern (for a period of 9 to 11 weeks) or as what Merck calls co-ops (i.e., assignments lasting four months during the calendar year). Students receive competitive compensation, and a housing or transportation allowance may also be possible.
Nestle Purina
Nestle Purina offers a Veterinary Channel Sales Internship that focuses on helping students develop sales accounts with veterinary offices for Purina animal nutrition products. Internships are offered to college undergraduates during their junior year. Internships last 10 weeks during the summer. Interns receive a salary, mileage reimbursement, and housing assistance. Successful interns are offered employment with the company after graduation.
Accelerated Genetics
Accelerated Genetics offers several internships including a Sales and Service Internship. Interns are involved in the areas of artificial insemination of dairy or beef cattle, market research studies, and servicing retail sales routes. Internships are based in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. Accelerated Genetics also offers internships in Marketing and Communications, Genetic Services, and Information Systems.
Alltech
Alltech offers a Marketing Internship Program at its international headquarters in Kentucky. Marketing interns work in public relations, species management, brand management, and other marketing areas. Interns also complete a project during their time at Alltech. Both full-time and part-time internships are available for undergraduate and graduate level students. Research internships are also available.
Bayer Animal Health
Bayer Animal Health offers a variety of animal-related internship opportunities available through their Human Resources department which will provide a list upon request. Bayer manufactures a wide variety of pharmaceutical products for both the livestock and companion animal markets.
Monsanto
Monsanto offers summer internships or semester-long co-op opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must have at least a 3.0-grade point average. Interns receive a salary, travel reimbursement, and relocation assistance. Internships are offered in such disciplines as supply chain management, agribusiness, and biotechnology, among others. In the past, sales and marketing internship positions gave students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience selling such biotech products as bovine somatotropin.
ADM Alliance Nutrition
ADM Alliance Nutrition offers internships in a variety of areas including field sales and national account sales. Applicants must be juniors in college with and a 2.8-grade point average. Interns are allowed to go on sales calls, collect marketing data, and work on special projects as directed by their supervisors.
Boehringer-Ingelheim Vetmedica
Boehringer-Ingelheim Vetmedica offers internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in many areas including pharmaceutical marketing. Applicants for these internships must be at least sophomores in college with a 3.2-grade point average. In the past, the company offered a dairy sales internship that allowed interns to work with territory sales managers and assist with sales calls.
Those wishing to pursue the field of veterinary pharmaceutical sales may also find valuable internship opportunities in related areas. Other internships related to animal science, equine science, or veterinary medicine also add strength to a candidate’s resume.
